Studying Abroad? Here Are the Best Travel Credit Cards to Take with You
You’re a college student who’s about to leave the comforts of home for a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience. Consider yourself lucky. Not everyone gets to study abroad, but those that do will have stories to tell for years to come. There are two reasons to apply for credit cards at this point in your life: establishing great credit is a must and, although you will probably still carry a bit of cash around plus a debit card, a credit card is a safer (not to mention cheaper) way to pay for food, transportation and other purchases when spending an extended period of time in a foreign country.
Studying abroad is fun and exciting and can open all kinds of doors. Whether you’re headed to South America or Asia (or anywhere else — the world is your oyster!) it’s important to pick the right card before you go. Below, a few credit cards we think are great when you’re studying outside of the U.S. Make sure to do your research and remember to always spend responsibly. Bon voyage!
Discover It Chrome for Students
There’s no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees on this one, which means you’ll have more money for food! There’s nothing quite as frustrating than spending money on pointless fees and with this card you don’t have to. If you’ve never had a credit card before, this is a great one for you since it’s available to students with little credit or no credit at all. Get double rewards your first year, two percent cash back on the first $1,000 spent per quarter (at gas stations and restaurants) and one percent back on all other purchases. Plus, you’ll earn $20 cash back every year your GPA is above a 3.0. How cool is that? Not only will this card get you where you need to go, it will also encourage you to excel in your studies.
Journey Student Rewards from Capital One
Another no-fee card (no annual fee or foreign transaction fees), the Journey Student Rewards card gives you one percent cash back on everything and up to 1.25% when you pay your card on time every month. Just like the Discover It Chrome card, this one is available to students with little or no credit and after five months of on-time payments, you may be eligible for a higher credit line.
Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students
And then there’s the Bank of America Travel Rewards Student card. Know what’s special about this one? You guessed it! No annual fee or foreign transaction fees here and you can earn 20,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 within the first three months of opening an account. Earn three points for every $1 spent at the Bank of America Travel Center, 1.5 points for every other $1 you spent and an extra 10 percent in points if you have either a Bank of America checking or savings account. This one, like the preceding two, is available to students with limited credit or no credit at all.
